Therapeutic vomiting
Vamana is an important panchakarma procedure for the treatment of imbalance of Kapha dosha.
A proper preparatory procedure is critical for Vamana therapy. Patient is usually given herbal medicines in the form of decoction and powder to enlighten digestive fire for the first 6 to 10 days. A Snehapana (intake of medicated ghee in increasing dose) follows as next stage for 7 days. After the 7 days of ghee intake, patient is suggested to go for Abhyanga (oil massage) and steam for 2 days. We also advise the patient to consume diet like black gram, sesame seed pudding, sweets, fish curry, curd, paneer etc during these 2 days.
On the Vamana therapy day, patient is advised to apply oil on body and to take hot water bath in early morning (5.30-6.00 a.m.). Patient is then administered with a glass of rice porridge added with 15-20 ml of ghee. Medicines for inducing vomiting will be given after 15 minutes followed by drinking herbal decoction in high quantity. The vomiting usually starts in few minutes and the herbal decoction is given in between.
After care of Vamana is also important which includes a herbal fumigation and strict diet regimens for next 3 days.
Vamana is a lengthy procedure and it should only be conducted under the supervision of an experienced Ayurvedic doctor.
