An effective Ayurveda treatment for Neck Pain
‘Greeva’ refers to the neck, and ‘vasti’ means ‘retaining’ or ‘holding in place.’ During Greeva Vasti, heated medicated oil is poured and pooled in a ring for a fixed period of time, over the patient’s nape of the neck to alleviate pain, stiffness, and cervical compressions. It is an ideal treatment for conditions such as cervical spondylosis, osteoporosis, sprains, muscle strains, and slipped discs, among others. Greeva Vasti promotes healing and delivers long-lasting results.
A thick dough is made using black gram flour and water. A ring is then shaped out of the dough and placed on the patient’s neck. The prescribed medicated oil is heated passively. The warm oil is poured into the dough ring. As the oil cools, more warm oil is added. After the prescribed amount of time, oil and dough are removed and patient is given a warm bath.
The patient will have to lie face down for 40 minutes during the treatment procedure. It may be difficult for some patients to lie face down for 40 minutes of the Greeva vasti session. In such cases, a varied form of treatment named Greeva Pichu is performed which involves the retention of warm oil on the neck with aid of a thick layer of cotton.
