Our sciatic nerve (the longest and thickest nerve in the body) originates from the low back and it supplies to both legs. Sciatica is one of the most severe nerve pain that affects this nerve. Sciatica typically occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated by a protruded disc or by a bony growth. This condition is commonly described as a sharp and shooting pain starting from the low back radiating to legs, which can significantly impact the mobility and quality of life.
In Ayurveda, it can be correlated with Gridhrasi, it is considered as one of the important vata disease. Gridhra means the bird, vulture; gridhrasi is derived from this root word. It is observed that in this disease, the patient gait is altered and similar to the walk of the vulture, hence the name gridhrasi. Others say, it is a deep pulling pain as if a vulture eating flesh from inside.
The typical pain of sciatica usually affects one side of the body, through the course of the sciatica nerve.
